Korea’s male archers missing the semifinals Men’s Individual Gold Day turned into a dark day for Korea at Panathinaiko: Korean male archers indeed left the historic stadium today with no medals around their neck. In addition, none of them were even present in the semifinals! Park Kyung Mo and Im Dong Hyun, the two remaining archers from Korea in the quarterfinals were sensationally defeated by teenager Tim Cuddihy (AUS) and veteran Hiroshi Yamamoto (JPN). Despite his young age, Cuddihy proved he had the temperament for competition shooting in his match with Park. Both men shot exactly the same score in the first three ends (28 out of a possible 30) and were therefore tied after 9 of this 12-arrow match. The massive crowd that had taken seat in the stadium could feel the unbelievable pressure on the field at that moment... Shooting first, the Australian scored two nines while his opponent shot an eight and a nine. Cuddihy with a one-point lead took his time – and the whole stadium held its breath – to score a perfect 10 that gave him the victory before Park had even shot his last arrow. Probably, nobody would have never bet before the Men’s individual competition that the 41-year old Hiroshi Yamamoto would climb again on an Olympic podium 20 years after his Bronze medal at Los Angeles Games. However, the Japanese veteran hit Korean Im Dong Hyun - number 1 seed and newly 18-arrow match Olympic Record holder - on the head in another cliffhanger of this sensational archery afternoon, defeating him on the score of 111-110. 19.08.2004 / Ludivine Maitre |
