Tough matches for Wunderle (USA) and Cuddihy (AUS)

Some of the 1/8 final matches remained inconclusive until the final arrow was shot. The American Vic Wunderle and the Chinese Xue Haifeng were still tied with both 155 with each one arrow to go. Shooting first, Xue scored an excellent 9. Wunderle, who won two medals at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, had to go to the bottom of himself to shoot a 10 and keep his Olympic dream alive. Final score: 165-164.

In his match with two times Olympic medalist (1996, 2000) Jang Yong Ho, young Australian Tim Cuddihy (17-year old) better withstood the pressure than his Korean elder (28). Behind by 1 point with one arrow each to go, Cuddihy scored a perfect 10 - while Jang shot only an 8 - to make sure he would be part of this afternoon’s quest for Gold. "It was a tough match but I felt very confident from the start. It was only before the last arrow that I got a little bit nervous, but I stayed focused and I made the shot", said Cuddihy.

Another Anglo-Saxon archer had a victorious 1/8 round this morning: Great Britain’s Laurence Godfrey, 28 years old and competing in his first Olympic Games, defeated the young Ukrainina Viktor Ruban. "I am very disappointed. My personal best is 174 and I couldn’t reach it. It’s very sad because I have been practicing four years to do well at the Athens Olympics", said Ruban after his loss.

After a very prudent start, Godfrey finished with two 29-point ends to serenely clinch the start 167-162. On his performance, the British commented: "I did my best as you can see from my score which was 167. My family is in Athens with me and I want to thank them for their support". In the next round, Godfrey will face impressive Chen from Chinese Taipei, but "Anything is possible. Just wait and you will see".

In the 100-percent Italian 1/8 match, the victory logically fell to Marco Galliazzo, 2004 European Champion, who beat his compatriot and team mate Ilario di Buo on the final score of 162 to 155. Di Buo was participating in nothing less than his sixth Olympic Games!
