Yamamoto kicks out World Champion Frangilli "The crowd helped me to win the match. I feel that I performed at a high level from start to finish. I am very satisfied with the outcome", said 41-year old Hiroshi Yamamoto after his victory over reigning World Champion Michele Frangilli from Italy. But there is no dispute about the final score: a 162 to 154 famous victory in favour of the Japanese archer. "I am disappointed, but Yamamoto was a better archer on the day. I shot a six and a seven and then I felt that it was all over", Frangilli commented after his loss. There was a dramatic ending in the 1/16 match between German Michael Frankenberg and Australian Tim Cuddihy. Shooting an 8 with his final arrow would have given Frankenberg a qualification to the 1/8 Olympic round. Instead, he offered 17-year old Aussie an unhoped-for victory after the latter’s average performance (164-163). Unsurprisingly, the three Korean team mates have all progressed to the next stage, the Men’s Gold Day of the Olympic competition, which will take place on Thursday at historic Panathinaiko Stadium. Im Dong Hyun has been the most impressive archer of all since the competition started. After his first seed last week in the Ranking Round, in which he shot a new World Record on the way, Im scored today 171, only two points behind current Olympic Record. Another team who made a strong impression are the Ukrainians. The three of them also qualified for the 1/18 round. The best of them, Viktor Ruban, shot a good 167 score in his match against Wang Cheng Pang from Chinese Taipei. 17.08.2004 / Ludivine Maitre |
