Frankenberg ready for Olympic challenge Being a quiet man, Michael Frankenberg from Hagen in Germany achieves his sporting goals in a reserved manner. He prefers to let his actions do the talking. In April, some of the world's best archers experienced this approach when Frankenberg performed strongly at the Italian Grand Prix in Roveretto. Among the archers he beat were world stars such as Nico Hendricks of Belgium, Italy's Matteo Bisiani and Baljinina Tsyrempilow of Russia. He won the silver medal at the event. Such was his form that he won selection for the German team for the Athens Olympics. Just getting to the Games has been one of the great moments of his career. "Competing in my first Olympics is a dream come true," said the 26-year old. So far, the Olympic experience has been one to remember for the popular archer. He was 21st after the Ranking Round. On Monday, competing in famous Panathinaiko Stadium for the first time, Frankenberg showed strong form in the 1/32 round by beating Russian Dmitry Nevemerzhitsky 140-135. This sets up a 1/16 round match with Australian Tim Cuddihy, the world junior champion. "My goal is to progress to the 1/8 Round, then I will take things as they come," he said. "I only hope the wind will stop tomorow. The wind came at us in many directions, making things difficult. I just have to trust in my technique and in God." For Frankenberg, his medal chances may well be blowing in the wind. 16.08.2004 / Andre Gegg |
