Windy morning to open archery competition The archery competition began this morning with the Women’s Individual 1/32 Elimination Round at history Panathinaiko Stadium. Bhutan’s only female Olympian at Athens 2004, Tshering Chhoden, progressed to the 1/16 round thanks to her 159-156 victory over the number 11 seed Lin Sang from China. "This win is important for my whole country and I hope that I have made people in Bhutan proud", Chhoden said. The two Korea’s women involved in this morning session had serene victories over their respective opponents. Defending Olympic champion Yun Mi Jin defeated Hanna Karasiova from Belarus on the score of 162 to 155, while her compatriot Lee Sun Jin beat Egyptian Lamia Bahnasawy 164-127. The best score of this Sunday morning was achieved by the Japanese archer Sayami Matsushita in her victorious match over the French Alexandre Fouace (165-157). The Greek archers had mixed fortunes in their first match with Fotini Vavatsi being defeated 160-156 by Ukrainian Teyanna Berezhna, while Elpida Romantzi progressed to the 1/16 round with a 151-143 victory over Berangere Schuh from France. Pregnant German archer Cornelia Pfohl comfortably (146-128) defeated the young Canadian Marie-Pier Beaudet. "When I am out there shooting I don’t feel any different than I do when I am not pregnant", she said. Good start for Germany in this competition with Pfohl’s teammate Anja Hitzler also progressing to the next stage thanks to her victory over Turkish Damia Gunay 163-152. 15.08.2004 / Ludevine Maitre |
