USA Looks OK

Along with Korea, the United States has been the most successful archery nation since the sport returned to the Games in 1972. Especially strong has been the American men. In fact, American men won four of the first five individual gold medals decided from 1972, the exception being 1980 when Americans did not attend the Games. In total, it has won five of the eight men’s individual gold medals decided since 1972. Besides 1980, the only time an American has not won a men’s individual medal at the Games was in 1992. Further, Darrell Pace, gold medallist in 1976 and 1984, is the sport’s only two-time individual champion in the modern era. It is likely the Athens team will be spearheaded by Vic Wunderle, the silver medallist in Sydney in 2000.
