The Korean Dynasty South Korea’s women archers are so good that they have won an Olympic gold medal in every event they have ever contested. Since Korea first competed in archery at the Games in 1984, it has won every women’s gold medal. The record stands at nine gold medals and counting. This makes them one of the Games’ greatest ever dynasties. At Sydney 2000, Korea won the women’s team and swept the three individual medals. Their greatest champion is Kim Soo Nyung, who has won four gold medals, a silver and a bronze, from three Olympic Games (1988, 1992 and 2000). In Athens, Yun Mi Jin can become the second archer after Kim to win four gold medals since the sport returned to the Games program in 1972. She will be supported by Park Sung Hyun, 21, the 2001 world champion and runner-up to Yun last year, and Lee Sung Jin, 19, a newcomer to the senior Korean team. (As a note, the greatest gold medallist in archery history is Belgium’s Hubert van Innis, who won six gold medals. He won two gold at the 1900 Games in Paris and four in Antwerp in 1920 when multiple archery events were contested.) 16.06.2004 / Travis Cranley |
