Defending Their Realms Archery will have both its men’s and women’s Sydney 2000 Olympic champions defend their individual titles in Athens. Australia’s Simon Fairweather and South Korea’s Jun Mi Jin have won selection to represent their countries in Athens. Each will be trying to break a Games hoodoo for gold medallists: no archer has ever successfully defended an Olympic individual title. Fairweather, 34, will be competing in his fifth Olympics. He retired from the sport after his gold medal success in Sydney but returned to competition late last year. He will spearhead an outstanding Australian men’s trio from Australia, which also includes teenagers David Barnes, the 2003 world championships bronze medallist, and Tim Cuddihy, a former world cadet champion. Yun is currently the hottest archer in the world. The 21-year-old is only the second archer in history (after compatriot Kim Soo Nyung) to hold all four major titles at once: the Olympic team and individual titles, and the world championships team and individual titles. Yun won her world championships double in July, 2003, in New York. Known as the "Queen with Four Crowns" she is a strong favourite to repeat her Sydney success. 16.06.2004 / Travis Cranley |
