Yun Mi Jin is known as the "Queen with four crowns" – she is only the second archery in history to hold the Olympic and world individual and team titles at the same time. The only other archer to do so was Korean legend Kim Soo-Nyung, a gold medal team-mate of Yun’s at Sydney 2000. Petite and poised, Yun, 21, can match Kim’s Olympic women’s record of four gold medals if she can achieve a famous double once more. As well, she is aiming to be the first individual gold medallist to successfully defend their Olympic crown. At 167cm and 55kg, she is not a power-packed archer, but her technical superiority and mental strength makes her an imposing opponent. Yun’s other celebrated wins include the individual and team events at the 2003 Olympic Test Event in Athens, the team event at the 2002 Asian championships, the individual and team events at the 2001 Korean championships, and the individual and team events at the German Grand Prix in Whyl in June, her only international appearance this year. The sport’s greatest current champion, Yun, a right-hander, will have many supporters as she attempts to make history here. A student back in her home city of Seoul (her club is listed as Kyunghee University), her likely battles with friend and team-mate Park Sung Hyun should be a highlight of the Games. 10.08.2004 / T.Cranley |
